When Should I Schedule My First OB-GYN Visit?
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that individuals schedule their first gynecologic visit between the ages of 13 and 15. However, it’s never too late to begin regular visits. Whether you are sexually active, experiencing menstrual irregularities, planning to conceive, or simply seeking preventive care, it’s always a good time to take charge of your reproductive health.
Why Are Regular OB-GYN Visits Important?
Routine OB-GYN visits serve many purposes:
- Establish a relationship with a provider you trust
- Screen for potential health conditions like cervical cancer or STIs
- Address menstrual, sexual, or hormonal health concerns
- Receive guidance on birth control and fertility
- Get vaccinated (e.g., HPV vaccine)
What to Expect During Your First Visit
Every OB-GYN visit is tailored to your needs, age, and health status. Here’s a breakdown of what you can generally expect during your first appointment at Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology:
1. Check-In & Health History
You’ll be asked to complete a new patient form, which includes questions about your medical history, menstrual cycle, sexual activity, medications, allergies, family history, and lifestyle. This helps your provider understand your health background and personalize your care.
2. General Physical Exam
Depending on your age and reason for the visit, a general physical exam may be performed. This typically includes:
- Height and weight measurements
- Blood pressure reading
- Thyroid and heart exam
3. Breast Exam
If you are over the age of 20, your provider may perform a manual breast exam to check for lumps or abnormalities. You may also receive education on how to do self-examinations at home.
4. Pelvic Exam (If Recommended)
This part of the exam may feel unfamiliar, but it is an important part of women’s health care. Your provider will gently examine your external and internal reproductive organs. A pelvic exam typically includes:
- External exam: The doctor visually examines the vulva.
- Speculum exam: A speculum is inserted to view the vaginal walls and cervix.
- Pap smear: If you’re 21 or older, a small sample of cervical cells may be taken for cancer screening.
- Bimanual exam: The doctor checks the size and shape of your uterus and ovaries by gently pressing on your abdomen and inserting two fingers vaginally.
Note: If you’re under 21 or not sexually active, you may not need a pelvic exam.
5. Discussion & Education
Your provider will take the time to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Topics commonly covered include:
- Menstrual health and irregularities
- Birth control options
- Sexual activity and STI prevention
- Fertility and family planning
- HPV vaccination and cancer screening recommendations
Tips to Prepare for Your Visit
- Try to schedule the visit when you’re not on your period (unless you’re having symptoms you want to discuss).
- Write down any questions or symptoms ahead of time.
- Know the first day of your last period.
- Bring a list of current medications, including supplements.
- Wear comfortable clothing and arrive early for paperwork.
